Somewhere Between Dancing and Dying
Somewhere Between Dancing and Dying brings together paintings made between 2012 and 2017. Using broad fields of color, graphite, gesso, tracing paper, and in some works, mud from the Texas Hill Country, the paintings register acts of covering, scraping, staining, and interruption. Forms emerge, disappear, and press against one another without resolving into image. Drawn from vernacular language and song, the titles place the work in an emotional register between sorrow and humor, endurance and release.
